Borussia Dortmund still trail the reigning champions by nine points, but a defeat would have been fatal, extending the gap to an insurmountable twelve points – if the current deficit isn't already. Despite their unwavering determination, Dortmund looked unrecognisable in the first half but staged a remarkable resurgence after the break to claim victory.

Hamburger SV dominated the first half. Dortmund even squandered a penalty on the stroke of half-time, with Felix Nmecha firing wide. By then, the scoreline already reflected an unexpected turn of events: the team currently 11th in the league held a two-goal lead against the second-placed side, who appeared far too vulnerable throughout the opening period.

The hosts carved out the first chance, with Beier denied by a sharp save from the visiting goalkeeper. However, Hamburger SV soon took control, pressing high and winning possession in the opposition half – or perhaps centre-back Reggiani simply failed to retain the ball – to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Mikelbrencis delivered from the right, and Otele's left-footed strike beat Kobel, who dived desperately but couldn't even get a touch.

The match then descended into a whirlwind for fifteen minutes: Kobel denied Otele and Konigsdorffer a second goal in the 23rd minute; VAR disallowed a goal to make it 0-2 for offside in the 25th; a video review also overturned a penalty awarded to Nmecha due to an illegal position; and Anton struck the crossbar in the 36th minute...

Then, Sambi Lokonga doubled Hamburger SV's lead to 0-2 in the 38th minute. The turnover, once again a result of the visitors' high press, came from Felix Nmecha this time. Fabio Vieira threaded the pass, and Lokonga scored, further complicating Dortmund's challenge. The hosts then missed another penalty through Nmecha in the 44th minute, confirming a disastrous first half for the 'Yellows'.

Nico Kovac made changes at half-time, replacing Adeyemi with Serhou Guirassy, and Reggiani, who was implicated in the first goal, for Ramy Bensebaini. The two eventual goalscorers immediately made an impact. This marked a crucial turning point in a match that had, until then, looked bleak for the home side, outplayed by the visitors' strong performance and clinical finishing.

Heuer Fernandes' save from Nmecha immediately after the restart only added to Borussia Dortmund's frustration, but they responded with immense force.

Then, in the 71st minute, another penalty arrived, and Ramy Bensebaini coolly converted it. He subtly slotted the ball home with his left foot, almost down the middle, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-2 and further fuel their rebellion.

The home side then drew level after two shots from Serhou Guirassy, with one of them securing the 2-2 equaliser in the same move, still with a quarter of an hour remaining. They didn't stop there, as Ramy Bensebaini scored his second, another penalty, in the 83rd minute to complete the comeback and, just in case, maintain their challenge in the Bundesliga, though the top spot still feels distant.
