Having stuttered with just two points from their previous three league fixtures, Inter rediscovered their clinical edge in this heavyweight clash against Roma, putting the Giallorossi to the sword with a five-goal blitz at the Giuseppe Meazza. Chivu's side delivered a resounding statement to their Scudetto rivals ahead of tomorrow evening's pivotal Napoli-Milan encounter.

Inter signalled their intent from the first whistle, breaking the deadlock inside sixty seconds. Marcus Thuram surged into the area before sliding a perfectly-weighted through ball for Lautaro Martinez; the Argentine bypassed Mancini and rifled a drilled right-footed strike past Svilar. Roma were left reeling by the Nerazzurri's explosive start, and were nearly two down moments later when Hakan Calhanoğlu unleashed a fierce long-range effort that forced a stunning fingertip save from Svilar.

With fifteen minutes on the clock, Lautaro Martinez threatened again from a narrow angle following Dimarco's delivery, but Svilar stood firm once more. Inter emerged for the second half in relentless mood. In the 51st minute, a devastating counter-attack left Lautaro Martinez one-on-one with Svilar, and the number ten made no mistake, slotting home Inter's third with a composed right-footed finish. The result was effectively put beyond doubt shortly after when Marcus Thuram met a Hakan Calhanoğlu corner to power a header into the top corner.

The rout continued in the 63rd minute as Nicolo Barella added a fifth. The midfielder burst through the heart of the Giallorossi backline and, aided by a kind deflection, coolly steered the ball past a helpless Svilar. Roma did manage a consolation in the 70th minute through Lorenzo Pellegrini, who found the net with a low drive from the centre of the box, though it served only to slightly soften the blow of a heavy defeat.

Bolstered by the return of their captain and looking refreshed following the international break, Inter appear to have hit their stride at a critical juncture of the campaign. The Nerazzurri now sit nine points clear of second-placed Milan and 10 ahead of Napoli in third, ahead of tomorrow's direct showdown at the Maradona. Roma, meanwhile, remain sixth, as their pursuit of a Champions League berth becomes increasingly difficult.
