January always provides an opportune moment to reflect on squad-building errors made in June. Financially strong clubs look to bolster their ranks to finish the season as strongly as possible and secure the highest possible league position.

As ever, the Premier League boasts the strongest economy, fewer issues with Financial Fair Play, and greater negotiating power, which explains why the biggest transfers have occurred within the division.

Once again, Manchester City have veered slightly off course at the start of the season, and with key players sidelined by injuries, they have opted for significant investment. The Cityzens secured January's most expensive signing, Antoine Semenyo, and also bolstered their defence with Marc Guehi, a player whose contract at Crystal Palace was set to expire in a few months and who was highly sought after by top clubs.

- Antoine Semenyo

Manchester City shelled out €72 million to sign one of the standout players from the first half of the Premier League season. The 26-year-old Ghanaian right-winger played for Bournemouth following an interesting career in British lower league football, which saw him feature for Bath, Bristol City, Newport County, and Sunderland before joining the Cherries in 2023.

- Conor Gallagher

The 25-year-old England international midfielder returns to the Premier League to bolster Tottenham's squad. A Chelsea academy graduate, he featured for Charlton, Swansea, and West Bromwich Albion before making his breakthrough at Crystal Palace. Atletico Madrid signed him in 2024, but allowed his departure a year and a half later for €40 million after a spell with the Rojiblancos that clearly declined over time.

- Brennan Johnson

The 24-year-old Wales international right-winger also emerged as one of January's prominent transfer names. He left Tottenham to reinforce a Crystal Palace side that has grown significantly in recent seasons in England. €40 million secured the transfer of this Nottingham Forest academy product, who also played for Lincoln City on loan before joining Tottenham, moving across London after two and a half seasons as a Spurs player.

- Taty Castellanos

A prolific goalscorer in Spanish football for Girona a few seasons ago, the Argentine boasts a lengthy career despite being only 27. He began at U. de Chile before playing for Torque in Uruguay and making his name at New York City in the MLS. The City Group network brought him to Girona, from where Castellanos moved to Lazio in 2023. Two and a half seasons later, West Ham have entrusted him with goalscoring duties after paying €29 million for his transfer.

- Matteo Guendouzi

The 26-year-old France international midfielder has already carved out an interesting career despite his youth. After progressing through the academies of PSG and Lorient, he moved from the latter to Arsenal, where he struggled to impose himself. He then played for Hertha Berlin, Olympique Marseille, and Lazio. He now leaves the Italian club to reinforce Fenerbahce for €28 million, becoming the most expensive signing outside the Premier League so far.

- Gerson

The Brazilian league boasts immense economic potential, attracting the best players from across South America. On this occasion, it has even lured a player from European football, as Gerson returns to his home country for €27 million. After impressing at Fluminense, the midfielder moved to Roma at a young age, also featuring for Fiorentina, Flamengo, and Olympique Marseille before joining Zenit last July.

- Marc Guehi

The England international centre-back has consistently performed at an excellent level for several seasons, making him a transfer target for top clubs worldwide, not just in England. Aged 25 and nearing the end of his contract, Crystal Palace made a shrewd move by accepting Manchester City's €23 million offer for his services. The defender came through Chelsea's youth ranks and also played for Swansea.

- Pablo

From Portugal, West Ham have brought in Brazilian forward Pablo. The Hammers paid €23 million to secure the centre-forward, one of Portugal's best attackers so far this season. An academy product of Famalicao, he also played for Pacos Ferreira before joining Gil Vicente for just €250,000 in July. The modest Portuguese club has seen his valuation multiply by almost 10 in less than a year.
