UK Man Gets Suspended Sentence for Running Illegal WhatsApp Betting Operation

Haydon Simcock, 40, narrowly avoided prison after admitting to running an illegal gambling operation through WhatsApp between October 2023 and September 2024, Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard.

Investigation and ChargesThe Gambling Commission, working alongside Staffordshire Police, launched its criminal investigation following a tip from a Racing Post investigative reporter. Simcock had falsely claimed to be the VIP commercial manager at The Post Bookmakers.

His illegal operation involved:

Recruiting customers to gamble via WhatsAppSetting up accounts and providing customer servicePersonally collecting cash deposits from bettorsSetting odds and offering matched deposits and referral rewardsEvidence of Serious MisconductData recovered from Simcock's devices revealed he accepted bets from individuals he suspected of drug dealing, suggested he could make a dissatisfied customer "disappear," and repeatedly assured the victim his £269,000 balance was "safe" despite having no intention of paying.

Sentencing and CostsThe court imposed a 30-week suspended sentence for two years, 200 hours of community service, and 20 hours of rehabilitation activity. Simcock must pay £230,000 in compensation to the victim and £60,000 toward Gambling Commission costs.

John Pierce, Commission Director of Enforcement, warned that using messaging apps does not shield illegal operators: "We can evidence such activity is taking place and we will use every power available to us to remove this unlawful activity from the British marketplace."
