Opta’s Supercomputer Names Spain as Top Favourite for the 2026 World Cup

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, data and artificial intelligence are already shaping the debate around potential winners. According to new projections from Opta’s supercomputer, Spain currently stands as the most likely nation to lift the trophy next summer in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Using a model that simulates the competition thousands of times, Opta has ranked Spain above all other contenders, giving Luis de la Fuente’s side a 17% chance of becoming world champions. That figure places them ahead of traditional heavyweights such as France and England, who complete the top three in the latest forecast.

France is rated second with a probability slightly above 14%, supported by the strength of a squad that blends World Cup-winning experience with emerging talent. England follows with close to 12%, as expectations grow that their current generation could finally end the country’s long wait for another global title.

Argentina, the reigning champions, appear just outside the podium in fourth place. Despite maintaining much of the core that triumphed in Qatar in 2022, the model assigns them under 9% to defend their crown. Germany and Portugal are next in line, both hovering around the 7% mark, while Brazil features lower than many fans might expect, with a projected chance of just over 5%.

One of the more interesting aspects of the forecast is how it reflects the growing competitiveness of international football. Teams such as the Netherlands, Norway and Colombia are all given realistic outside chances, while host nations Mexico, the United States and Canada remain long shots despite home advantage.

The model also factors in the new tournament format, which will feature 48 teams for the first time. This expanded structure increases uncertainty and creates more opportunities for surprises, particularly for nations that may emerge from the playoff routes. According to Opta, teams still battling for qualification collectively hold nearly 4% probability of producing the eventual champion.

Opta’s system combines betting market odds with its own power rankings, based on both recent and historical performance. Each match outcome is calculated, and the entire tournament is simulated 10,000 times to generate final probabilities.

While Spain’s current status as favourite is likely to excite supporters, analysts caution that projections this far from kickoff are far from definitive. Injuries, form, and tactical evolution over the coming months could dramatically reshape the picture.

For now, though, the numbers suggest that Spain enters 2026 not just as a contender — but as the team to beat.
