Hungary Launches First Green Finance Conference with ESG Regulatory Focus
The Hungarian National Bank (MNB) has held its inaugural annual Green Finance Conference in collaboration with the National University of Public Service and the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (SZTFH), marking a significant step in advancing ESG compliance across Hungary's financial sector.
ESG Becomes Business ImperativeLászló Hunyadi, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of National Economy, emphasized the rapid evolution of ESG requirements: "A year and a half ago, many were still asking what ESG is. Today, ESG has become a quality seal and is gradually becoming an unavoidable business consideration."
The Hungarian ESG Act, which came into force in early 2024, represented a turning point, with the government signaling that sustainability is now a core economic policy direction rather than a secondary consideration.
Regulatory Framework Takes ShapeSZTFH President Dr. László Nagy outlined the Hungarian approach: "The strength of the Hungarian model lies in measurability and sound logic. The ESG law and related regulatory framework interprets sustainability data collection as one of the most important tools for risk management and increasing corporate resilience."
He emphasized that ESG appears not as an ideological issue but as a corporate practice built on objective, measurable data points.
Green Finance Awards AnnouncedThe MNB presented its annual Green Finance Awards to leading institutions:
Green Bank Award: Erste Bank Zrt.Green Insurance and Pension Fund Award: K&H Biztosító Zrt.Green Investment Fund Manager Award: Amundi Befektetési Alapkezelő Zrt.Winners were selected based on composite indicators including compliance with MNB's green banking recommendations and the sustainability value of green assets under management.
Implications for Regulated EntitiesThe conference signals intensifying ESG expectations for all entities supervised by Hungarian authorities, including gambling operators under SZTFH oversight. The emphasis on measurable, data-driven compliance suggests operators should prepare for potential ESG reporting requirements aligned with the broader Hungarian regulatory framework.
