GGL Calls on Licensed Operators to Step Up Fight Against Illegal Gambling
Germany's Common Gambling Authority (GGL) used its presence at ICE Barcelona 2026 to deliver a clear message to licensed operators: do more to fight illegal gambling.
Regulatory Strategy OutlinedSpeaking at the Gaming in Germany Breakfast event, GGL Department Head Nadja Wierzejewski outlined the authority's coordinated approach to tackling the illegal online gambling market. The strategy includes:
Prohibition orders against unlicensed operatorsPayment blocking measuresIP blocking of illegal websitesAction against advertising for illegal gamblingEnforcement across the entire value chainOperators Called to ActionThe GGL issued a direct appeal to licensed operators to use their resources more effectively against illegal competitors. According to the regulator, legal operators possess comprehensive market knowledge, influence across the value chain, and direct contacts with service providers that can significantly amplify the impact of regulatory enforcement.
The authority specifically called for operators to distance themselves more clearly from illegal offerings and exercise greater due diligence when selecting business partners.
Partnership Approach EmphasizedThe GGL stressed that success against illegal online gambling requires collaboration. While regulators lead enforcement efforts, licensed operators and their service providers are described as essential partners whose cooperation is crucial for creating a stable, sustainable legal market.
The regulator attended the international trade fair from January 19-21, participating in presentations and roundtable discussions while networking with European regulatory counterparts and industry representatives.
