Dutch Survey: 56% Experience Taboo Around Discussing Gambling Problems

More than half of Dutch adults (56%) experience a taboo around discussing gambling and gambling addiction, according to new research from the Kansspelautoriteit conducted in partnership with OpenOverGokken. The survey of 1,000 Dutch residents reveals a striking disconnect: while gambling remains stigmatized, 48% of the population gambles at least once per month.

Dutch Gambling HabitsLotteries dominate the Dutch gambling landscape, with 59% of gamblers participating in draws including the Staatsloterij. Scratch cards follow at 33% popularity. Online gambling continues to grow, with nearly 6% of adults placing bets on licensed websites, according to the Autumn 2025 Monitoring Report. Dutch gamblers spend an average of €298 annually on gambling activities.

Barriers to Seeking HelpThe research identifies significant obstacles preventing problem gamblers from accessing support:

53% of respondents are unclear where to find help for gambling addiction29% say they would not dare to seek help if they developed a gambling problem75% view gambling problems as the result of poor personal decisions34% find it difficult to confront someone about their gambling behaviorNotable gender differences emerged: 41% of men find it difficult to address someone's gambling behavior compared to 27% of women.

Regulator ResponseKansspelautoriteit chairman Michiel Groothuizen emphasized that gambling addiction is not individual failure but a complex issue where shame and ignorance prevent people from seeking timely help. The regulator is promoting the OpenOverGokken platform, which provides accessible information and support for those with gambling-related questions.
