Dutch Regulator Warns Operators Over Misleading Early Payout Betting Features
The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) has addressed multiple online sports betting operators over incomplete information regarding their 'early payout' feature, which allows bets to be settled as won before a match officially ends.
How Early Payout WorksThe early payout function enables players to have their bet considered won when their team takes a two-goal lead during a match, regardless of the final result. Odds for bets with early payout are lower than standard wagers. However, the feature cannot apply to draw bets, as no team holds a lead in such scenarios.
Misleading Promotion Creates ConfusionThe Ksa found that operators were promoting lower odds for draw outcomes under the early payout feature. While operator terms and conditions stated that early payout does not apply to draws, this was not clearly communicated at the point of bet placement. This led to player confusion, with some believing early payout would apply to their draw wagers.
Compliance RequirementsOperators are legally required to provide clear and comprehensible information about possible bet outcomes, including all applicable conditions. The Ksa determined that operators offering this feature were not meeting their disclosure obligations.
Following the regulator's intervention, all operators concerned have improved their communication practices. Players are now more clearly informed about the limitations of early payout when betting on draws.
