Belgium Issues Technical Guidance for EPIS Age Verification at Newsagents
Belgium's Gaming Commission has released a technical note outlining requirements for the Electronic Player Identification System (EPIS) checks that will become mandatory at newsagents from 1 May 2026.
Certification RequirementsUnder the new rules, EPIS checks must be conducted using certified computer systems installed on point-of-sale devices. The certification process falls under Title 2 of Book VIII of Belgium's Code of Economic Law, with oversight from the Gaming Commission's Technical Evaluations Department.
The technical note was developed at the request of the newspaper trade sector to clarify the certification pathway. The Gaming Commission consulted with industry stakeholders and incorporated feedback from a provisional version of the guidance before finalizing the document.
